My name is Shreya Kane, and my dedication to specializing in menopause care stems from a deeply personal journey. Like many women, I navigated the complexities of perimenopause in my late 30s. This period was marked by a noticeable lack of readily available information, leaving me feeling as though I were traversing uncharted territory. This experience, while challenging, became a catalyst for profound learning and growth.
Personal Experience and Professional Dedication
During this time, I experienced a particularly challenging period. Even as a medical professional, I felt unprepared for the changes occurring within my own body. The impact was significant, affecting my relationships, family dynamics, mental well-being, career, and overall health. I pursued specialized training with the British Menopause Society and actively engaged in research concerning Women's Health and Menopause. As a menopause advocate, my mission is to empower women with evidence-based lifestyle medicine, strategies, and knowledge, enabling them to navigate this transition with minimal disruption and achieve optimal health.

To achieve this, I work within my clinic and the NHS, and I educate fellow clinicians. Additionally, I conduct workshops and educational sessions for the public and local communities, focusing on the biology and physiology of the female body and the significant impact of menopause on overall health.

Menopause can have far-reaching effects on a woman's well-being, encompassing psychological, musculoskeletal, and metabolic changes. Fluctuations in hormone levels can lead to mood swings, anxiety, irritability, and even depression. Cognitive changes, such as difficulty concentrating or memory lapses, are also common. Declining estrogen levels can contribute to a loss of bone density, increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Menopause can influence metabolic processes, leading to changes in body composition, such as increased abdominal fat. This can elevate the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Hormonal changes can also impact the gut microbiome, leading to digestive issues like bloating, changes in bowel habits, and increased sensitivity.
Evidence-Based Lifestyle Strategies and HRT Considerations
To mitigate these effects, I emphasize evidence-based lifestyle strategies, including a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to support hormonal balance and overall health, 1 emphasizing calcium and Vitamin D to support bone health. A combination of cardiovascular exercise and strength training can improve mood, maintain bone density, and manage weight. Practices such as mindfulness, meditation, and yoga can help regulate mood and reduce anxiety. Establishing a consistent sleep routine and creating a relaxing bedtime environment can improve sleep quality. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is another option that can effectively alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life. However, the risks and benefits of HRT vary for each individual, and a thorough discussion with a General Practitioner (GP) is essential to determine the most appropriate course of action.
